The Right Way to Exfoliate Your Skin

You know how important it is to take care of your skin, especially your face. You probably also know that exfoliating your face is a good idea, but what’s the best way to exfoliate?

Before you delve into exfoliating, you should be using a gentle daily cleanser; the more natural the better! Harsh ingredients in lots of popular cleansers can strip away the very things that keep your skin looking healthy. Once you’ve chosen the right face wash for you, use it every day, and no more than twice a day. This will prevent your pores from getting clogged with excess oil, dirt, and dead skin.

If you want to do double-duty, use a daily exfoliating cleanser. This is a cleanser that is gentle enough to use every day but still offers a little extra scrub action. If you are a twice-a-day face washer, wash in the morning and before going to bed.

When you use an exfoliator, you are getting rid of the stuff that your daily face wash left behind. It helps remove those dead, old skin cells, to show off the great new skin hiding down below. While your face definitely benefits from a good exfoliation, the rest of your body will benefit too, especially your feet and lips.

Exfoliants don’t need to be harsh to be effective. You may not even be aware of the exfoliants that are brought to you by Mother Nature. Coffee grounds are a great natural exfoliant, not only does coffee wake you up, it wakes up your skin. If you’ve ever wanted to roll in sugar, now’s your chance! Finely-ground sugar is possibly the yummiest natural exfoliant, and you won’t even mind if a little gets past your lips.

Together, almonds and oatmeal could probably make a great dessert, but they are also a treat for your skin, as they are both excellent for exfoliating. Finely-ground sea salt can be found in a slew of popular exfoliators.

When you combine nature with nature, what do you get? Naturally awesome, that’s what. Check out products that combine those natural exfoliators with other goodies from Mom Nature. Green tea, honey, and essential oils are perfect plus-ones for exfoliators.

Natural exfoliants are physical exfoliants, meaning they work by being massaged onto your skin. Dead skills whisked away, the skin is happy. The opposite of a physical exfoliant is a chemical exfoliant. You’ve probably seen these combined with agents like retinol and alpha hydroxy acid.

It’s important that not only to choose a gentle exfoliant but also to not overdo it. Too much exfoliating can strip the natural oils from your skin, and lead to a very unwanted breakout. If you go too hard on the scrubbing, you will likely irritate your skin, and irritated skin gets all red in the face. For most skin types, it’s best to exfoliate once or twice a week.

Treating your skin to gentle exfoliation is one of the best ways to keep your skin looking fresh and healthy. So get out there, find an exfoliant that works for you, and go get your scrub on!
